A number of important anniversaries will be marked in 2018: 100 years since the death of Claude Debussy, 200 years since the birth of Charles Gounod and 150 years since the death of Gioachino Rossini. One of the ones that we will be specially commemorating in the Season is the centenary of the birth of a multi-faceted musician: Leonard Bernstein. A composer, pianist, conductor, author, lecturer and, perhaps, I may have left out other strings to the bow of this great American artist born on 25 August 1918 who passed away on 14 October 1990. However, let’s take it one step at a time and give an overview of the program for the 24th edition of the Andorra la Vella-MoraBanc Music and Dance Season.

The first performance will be on 1 February by one of the most renown American dance companies around, Ailey II, in an adapted arrangement that will enable the dancers to move freely on our stage. One of its must-see dance routines is Revelations, created by Alvin Ailey, the founder of this great ballet troupe based in the heart of Manhattan.

And speaking of revelations, another will grace our stage on Tuesday 13 February: the Georgian pianist Khatia Buniatishvili. Dubbed the Beyoncé of the piano, it is a well-earned name given the pianist’s great stage presence and the power she exudes when playing her instrument. We will listen to a repertoire of pieces by Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Liszt.

This year we have once again scheduled a concert on a Sunday. We did so with the Vienna Boys’ Choir in 2012 at six in the evening. It was a very pleasant experience and proved to be very popular. Many children and young people were able to come and enjoy it, as all of the concerts were then held at nine thirty in the evening. On this occasion, on Sunday 4 March we will have the privilege of listening to a select group from the most famous and acclaimed orchestra in the world: the Berlin Philharmonic. The Virtuosos of the Philharmonic will pay tribute to Leonard Bernstein on this day, as the first half of the performance will be entirely dedicated to the author of the great musical West Side Story. In the second half, the protagonist will be Tchaikovsky, who will be remembered on the 125th anniversary of his death with one of his most well-known music scores: his colossal Serenade for String Orchestra, opus 48.

On Tuesday 24 April, opera will close the Season with one of the most sought-after and applauded voices in opera houses and concert halls the world over: the Mexican Javier Camarena. The performance of this extraordinary tenor in Andorra la Vella shows that the Season continues to give its full support to opera that is so popular among local audiences, who still recall the fascinating recital given by Cecilia Bartoli last March.
